Are you looking for the right Sydney painter for your home?
With hundreds of painters to choose from across Sydney, how to find a great and trusted choice?
You need to do your checks and ask the right questions to save you both money, risk and frustration.
So here are five questions worth asking any Sydney painter.
1. Do you have a painting license?
This question will depend on the size of the job.
In Sydney and NSW, jobs less than $5,000 do not require a license.
Personally though, if a tradesperson is a professional and experienced painter that specialises in painting “every other day of the week”, than I would expect him/her to carry a licence regardless of the value of the job.
By selecting a non-licensed painter, you run the risk they are not fully experienced in the profession.
2. Do you have insurance for your painting business?
Never hire an uninsured painter!
Your painter should have public liability insurance to protect you (and him/her) should an injury or damage occur on your property during the paint job.
Imagine what could go wrong:
-
- Painting spills that damage your furniture
- Falling off a ladder whilst painting
- Stumbling over paint and drop sheets
- Neighbours and friends accidentally hurting themselves on relocated wires
Ask for a copy of their insurances to see if it’s up to date.
3. What are your painting qualifications?
You can ask this question in a number of ways.
-
- Check how long the painter has been working in the industry. The longer the better
- Ask for local references you can contact
- Ask to see some of their projects in your area
A good painter should have no problems showing you their previous work or allowing you to contact their clients.
4. What is your painting process?
Sounds simple, but the ‘painting process” between one painter to another varies so significantly that it can lead to massive price and quality differences.
Find out:
-
- What type of preparation work they do to fix cracks and holes beforehand
- How long they expect the job to take
- Who exactly will be doing the work- the painter or external sub-contractors
5. What is included in your painting quote?
Always ask for a detailed quote from the painter.
The quote should include the number of paint coats, the quality of paint being used as well as painting “exclusions”. Avoid getting surprised at the end of the job by “extras’ by always asking for a fixed price quote.
