5 key checks when choosing local tradesmen in Sydney’s North Shore

Looking for a North Shore tradie can be challenging and confusing especially given the risk of making the wrong decision. Fortunately, there are some foolproof ways of narrowing down your choices.

Here is a checklist for selecting a good tradie in Sydney’s North Shore.

1. Ask how a North Shore tradesman will charge for the job

Just like any type of service, asking about the price is important. Depending on the type and size of the job, a tradie may offer you a price by the hour or a fixed price quote, meaning if it takes longer than expected, you cannot be charged more.

It is quite common for North Shore electricians and plumbers to charge by the hour, especially for small emergency jobs, where a service fee may also be involved.

May sure you ask over the phone what they charge and how they will charge you.

2. Does your North Shore tradie have a good reputation?

According to various surveys, more than 60% of homeowners previously hired tradesmen based on reputation alone.  This shows the importance of doing reputation checks on the tradies you select.

You can do research on their reputation by speaking to recent customers or getting online and seeing what sorts of reviews you can find about the business.

There are also online sites like Tradebusters that do reputation checks on the tradesmen in their network meaning you can be assured the business you select ticks off a lot of your boxes.

3. Does your tradie explain key contract inclusions and exclusions?

Quotes are just the first step. You have to ask the trades business what is included in the contract price, especially for larger jobs over $1,000. Quotes will obviously vary, and a large reason for this could be the process used, material quality levels, and finishes. This explains why some quotes are significantly lower (or higher) than others and why you cannot always assume the cheapest quote is the best.

For example, with a paint job, you need to understand if the walls will be prepared the number of paint coats, and the quality of paint as this will all affect the price. The more comprehensive and detailed the quote, the safer you are.

And don’t get caught out, especially for larger jobs. Always ask about “contract exclusions” so that you are sure that you are getting everything you expect.

4. Is the tradie licensed to do the job?

Builders and other tradesmen like electricians and plumbers are required under NSW Fair Trading laws to have a license.

Ask the tradie for a copy of their license or get online to the NSW Fair Trading website and confirm it for yourself.

5. Tradesmen public liability insurance?

All tradies in business are required to carry insurance, especially public liability insurance. This is regardless of the size or value of the job- even if it’s less than $100.

Tradie tips

Remember you are risking yourself financially, the trade, and anyone else around you by not checking they have appropriate cover. Ask your insurance broker about the types of insurance available to you and the tradie especially if you are carrying out a major renovation.
