We put the spotlight on the Sutherland Shire
For Sydney siders looking for a change of pace on the weekends and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, the Sutherland Shire is worthy of attention. The area is considered one of the safest locations in the Sydney area – an opinion backed up by official statistics.
Sutherland Shire has excellent public transport infrastructure taking residents to the city in around 35 – 45 minutes. The train ride promises to be even shorter in the future should the express Sydney metro line extension to Hurstville eventuate.
House prices are still affordable and, while not beachfront, still provide convenient access to beaches as well as national parks. These features all add up to an excellent location for raising a family.
Weekends in Sutherland Shire are full of outdoor activities including kite surfing, sailing, and wakeboarding. Life isn’t all about the beach as residents can also explore the many acres of the Royal National Park by bike or on foot.
Sutherland Shire is well-known for easy access to the city, but with so many facilities available, it’s hard to see why anyone would need to leave. There are hospitals, shopping centres, no shortage of public and private schools, and heaps of potential for enjoying outdoor activities of all types.
Kareela
Kareela is considered to be the most livable southern Sydney suburb, which has a lot to do with its incredibly low crime rate. Situated on the Oyster Bay, Kareela residents enjoy plenty of wide open spaces, excellent telecommunications services, and fantastic water views. Kareela only loses a few points for lack of culture and less shopping opportunities.
Cronulla
Cronulla is famous for its beaches and ferries and providing excellent access to buses and trains. Where Cronulla falls down is in its less than excellent scores on crime rate (when compared against Kareela), and low access to employment hubs. All other ratings for telecommunications, shopping, open areas and education are firmly in the fair to average category.
Sutherland
Sutherland lies just north of the Royal National Park, and while it doesn’t score highly in any particular area, it does solidify its entry as a quality place to live with strong points for its variety in cafes and restaurants, and its superb offerings in telecommunications. Sutherland also has interesting topography, provides wide open spaces, and has access to educational opportunities for growing families.
Miranda
If you love shopping, then Miranda is the place where you will want to settle down. It’s home to a Westfield shopping centre and provides tons of employment opportunities close-by. Miranda residents also have their pick of cafes, restaurants, and education, and the waterfront views aren’t bad either. Plenty of train links provide convenient travel to the city and surrounding areas.
Caringbah
Caringbah is also a favourite location for shopping and gets top marks for its variety in dining experiences including cafes and restaurants serving all types of cuisine for whatever you may be in the mood. As far as culture, telecommunications and main road travel go, Caringbah scores are good, but nothing you could consider fantastic.
