Avoid the dodgy builders!
We all know someone that has experienced the dodgy builder- you know, the one that runs off with the deposit, does a poor quality job or was simply terrible at having around.
So how can you avoid them and find a builder that is so-NOT dodgy?
Check out these tips.
1. Seek local recommendations for builders
Locals know it best!
Your neighborhood hardware store is a good source for finding a builder. They deal with them regularly so know who is who in the area.
Family and friends are also a great trusted source.
2. Do background checks on the builder
This includes looking at:
- How long they have been in business for
- Whether they have started and closed multiple businesses or ever declared bankruptcy
- If they have ever had their licence suspended or cancelled
3. Review the builders portfolio and works
Looking a builder’s past and recent work is critical, especially for large renovation and home build projects that could cost you tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Ask for contact details of their recent customers and arrange to see their job.
A dodgy builder may hesitate to offer this, but a so-NOT dodgy builder will be more than happy too.
4. Source builders from reputable online networks
Credible networks like Tradebusters Connect offer a safe way to finding local builders. These networks have a strong interview and vetting system to review each business in their network.
More importantly, they also have a “we don’t do dodgy” policy!
